Week 7: Writing About Seven Albums a Week (FEB 12–18)
Thundercat — Drunk
This is the bassist and vocalist’s best album to date. There is a consistent dreamlike atmosphere throughout the record. It lasts over 20 songs, but every track does not overstay its welcome. I love how the album doesn't sound too polished and brings exciting performances out of its collaborators. It was a tremendous surprise heating Kenny Loggins and Malcolm McDowell.
Thundercat is wonderfully adept at illustrating the intended vibe of this album. He expresses his personality in multiple facets on this LP. He makes it known that he likes making fart noises and cat sounds. There are even comedic moments like in “Captain Stupido” and “Bus In These Streets.” On the latter, he sings, “Thank God for technology ’cause where would we be if we couldn’t tweet our thoughts?”
This is definitely music suited to accompany an acid trip. Thundercat has kept his sound otherworldly throughout his career. Drunk’s purpose is to make it seem like you're having an out-of-body experience, whether you're sober or not. This is especially the case with these heavenly synths.
